It’s our 50th anniversary. Come party with us!

By Dawnell Smith

Do you love fabulous music, dancing, and the eager verve of spring? Are you looking for a mid-summer grand adventure in the Arctic? Does your mouth water over the thought of a late-summer fish fry?

We’ve got you covered, starting in May with a concert featuring the Super Saturated Sugar Strings and Witty Youngman. The Sugar Strings make what many people call gypsy-country alt-folk music with funky contemporary string melodies, vocal harmonies, and a generally big-hearted sound. Their songs build a scaffolding of horns, strings, keys, percussion, an array of voices into original songs that carry a sonic, dynamic, sometimes haunting, always yearning spirit.

Singer-songwriter Witty Youngman will open the show with blues and jazz-influenced reflections on social issues, as in this recent original song, Forget-Her-Not, submitted in the NPR Tiny Desk Contest.

We’re really excited about this line-up and a chance to celebrate spring, our 50th anniversary, and Alaska music with all of you. There will be drinks and food available, and plenty of chances to dance, laugh, and share stories.

The events starts at 6:30 on May 10 at the Nave in Anchorage, 2502 Spenard Road. Get your tickets now!

Go big or go home!

There’s another kind of music in the Arctic, too—the sound of a lone caribou jogging across a rocky creek, of Arctic bumblebees buzzing through low-lying wildflowers, the wing song of hunting jaegers, the clucking of ptarmigan, and of course falling water and wind.

Well, we’ve got the trip for you in partnership with Tundra Travels.

This June 24-30 journey in Gates of the Arctic National Park will include basecamp hiking, photography lessons from professional nature and wildlife photographer Carl Johnson, Arctic Light Images, and a chance to learn more about the region and the threats it faces from guide Haley Johnston and our legal director Teresa Clemmer.

There are two spots left on the trip, and we invite you to take a leap of faith and generosity in joining it. You won’t regret it!

Celebrating in big and small ways…

One of our 50th year goals includes increasing the number of monthly donors. To champion that cause, we’re doing monthly drawings from the list of all monthly donors for a Trustees goodie bag with coffee.

You can sign up to donate monthly today to get on that list now!

At the end of the year, we will do a final drawing of all monthly donors with fabulous goodies to give out, including the grandest of them all—a trip with Tundra Travels for the summer of 2025!
